12 Healthy Road Trip Snack Ideas

Eating while on a road trip can sometimes be an adventure in and of itself. After all, there are always plenty of little hole in the wall diners, back road cafes, or even a unique food trucks calling your name when those pesky hunger pains strike. 

However, eating out at every stop along the way can get expensive. We’re not saying that you should ditch every drive-in or pass up an opportunity to try a local delicacy but for the sake of your wallet, and even your waistline, here are a few suggestions for healthy and easy to consume snacks for the road that are also easy to prepare and pack:

  1. Beef Jerky: Full of protein, and available in a multiple of yummy flavors, jerky will keep you satisfied and full. It’s also a staple at most gas stations, making it easy to replenish on the go.
  2. Popcorn: Who says popcorn is just for the movies? Not only is popcorn a great source of fiber and complex carbohydrates, but it will also provide you with the energy you need to stay alert and focused while on the road.
  3. Hard-boiled eggs: Easy to prepare, store, and eat, eggs are packed with protein. Grab some crackers for a well-rounded snack on the go.
  4. Protein bars: The benefit is right in the name! Just watch the sugar level. Look for protein bars with all-natural ingredients.
  5. String cheese: Perfectly paired with apple slices, string cheese is a great combo of healthy fats, good proteins, and complex carbohydrates.
  6. Carrots & Grapes: Not only are they great for you, but they also are a great “boredom” snack to have on hand, as an alternative to the common junk foods we often reach for. Almond butter with strawberries is also worth a tasty try!
  7. Hummus and Celery: Full of protein and B vitamins, hummus will keep your belly full and happy, not to mention deliver a great crunch.
  8. Greek yogurt: Delivering a healthy dose of protein, eat it plain or top with some nuts and fruit for some added fiber and energy.
  9. Peanut Butter & Jam Sandwiches: A family favorite, PB & J will keep road trippers of all ages satiated and full, delivering a full serving of complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Not a fan of PB & J? Try some ham and cream cheese wheels or pita pocket sandwiches.
  10. Pistachios: A tasty treat packed full of unsaturated fats and fiber, pistachios are an easy grab and go snack. Pair them with walnuts for some added plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. Mix things up by adding in some baked chickpeas.
  11. Trail Mix: Another common gas station staple, trail mix is always a fan favorite, or better yet make your own for the perfect combo of salty, sweet, and savory. Add some dried fruit and sunflower seeds for an irresistible, and filling, mix. 
  12. Dark Chocolate: Yes, you read that right. Dark chocolate not only satisfies a sweet tooth but it also lowers the risk of heart disease and increases brain function. Now that’s great chocolate!
