When was the last time you gave the interior of your vehicle a really good cleaning? We don’t just mean picking up the trash, throwing out last week’s disposable coffee cup, or brushing some crumbs off the seat. We mean a good clean that leaves your car feeling dealership fresh, not to mention helping to maintain its resale value. But, with professional detailing costing in the hundreds, it’s not always feasible to be outsourcing your clean. Luckily, you can do a decent job yourself in your garage using supplies you can make easily at home, or buy from your local hardware store.

DIY Car Upholstery Cleaner

Muddy floor mats, carpets, and any dingy spots on your car seats can quickly be removed with a simple solution of 3 tablespoons of grated soap, 2 tablespoons of Borax, 10 drops of essential oils (optional) and 2 cups of boiling water. Stir all ingredients together until a foamy mixture appears. Take a stiff brush dipped in the solution, scrub, and then wipe down with a clean wet rag.

DIY Armor-All Wipes

Put the shine back into your wheels as well your vehicle’s vinyl surfaces with wipes you can make with just a few everyday household items. All you’ll need is 2 tall plastic containers, 1 roll of paper towels, 2 cups of warm distilled water, 2 cups baby oil, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 6- 8 drops of dish soap, and 3-5 drops of Tea Tree essential oil. Cut the paper towels in half and stick one half in each of the containers, then mix all of the liquid ingredients together. Pour the liquid over the paper towel, letting it soak in for a few minutes, and you’re all set! (Source: https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/diy-armor-wipes/).

Don’t have time to make your own? No problem! Olive oil also works well as a conditioner and leather polish.

Dust Buster

A can of compressed air easily purchased at any convenience store makes cleaning air vents and others small crevices a “breeze”. If the compressed air doesn’t fully do the trick, you can dampen a small sponge brush, cotton ball, or swap with your cleaner of choice to finish the job.

Erase Away

Bring a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser along for the ride to tackle stubborn dirt, dust, and grime in your car on plastic and vinyl surfaces as well as leather seats (gently of course). You can prep any textured vinyl with a toothbrush to loosen up the dirt in advance.

Remove and Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Replacing your vehicle’s cabin air filter can help improve not only the interior smell of your vehicle but also any harmful air particulars, dust, dirt, pollen, spores, and germs housed in it. Check the manual for your vehicle as not all makes and models have a removable air filter installed.

Eliminate Pet Hair

Chances are if Fido is a constant companion in your vehicle, so is his hair. Grab a water bottle, spray the hair covered surface, and then run a squeegee over it. The hair will come in an instant!

After The Clean

Now that your vehicle is sparkling clean, and smells good to boot, you’ll likely want to keep it this way for as long as possible. Here are a few tricks for the road:

  • A plastic cereal container lined with a grocery bag makes a perfect in-vehicle garbage can
  • Cup holders are a constant magnet for gunk. Placing a silicone muffin cup, or even a paper one, at the bottom of each holder means that gunk can be washed, and or thrown away.
  • Having a pack of auto cleaner wipes, or even baby wipes, in your glove box, will come in very handy the next time you have an unexpected spill.
  • Keep an empty bin or box in the trunk to corral gear like washer fluid, jumper cables, ice scraper, salt, etc, to keep them rolling around in the trunk.

Happy Cleaning!
