6 Tips for Choosing the Right Car Dealership

Car shopping – it’s a big task. Not only do you have to decide what to buy, but you often also have to decide where to buy. And, with car dealerships practically on every street corner, sometimes choosing the dealership that’s right for you can be overwhelming.

So, how do you walk away with the make and model of the car you want, while also having the best car shopping experience possible?

By following these six car shopping tips, you’ll be better equipped to select the right dealership for your next automotive purchase, one that has your best interests, and not their own, in mind. 

Tip #1: If you can’t find a way to contact a dealership, shop elsewhere.

A reputable car dealership should make their contact details easy to find online, including an address, phone number, and email, not only just for their main phone line but also for each of their departments. After all, you may have questions or concerns after your purchase that you need to be able to easily follow up on. Hours of operation should also be available because if you’re going to take the time to go to the dealership, they should make the times they can see you easy to find.

Tip #2: Shop close to home.

Sure, you might be able to get a great deal at an out of town or state dealership, but are you really going to want to drive an hour or two to that same dealership every time you need to make a payment on your financing program or take your car in for service? Probably not. Save yourself the time, wear and tear, not to mention the gas, and shop local, if you can.

Tip #3: Consider how you’re going to pay for your vehicle.

If your purchase is dependent on a successful financing arrangement, whether through a bank or a low-credit loan from a Buy Here/Pay Here dealership, you’ll want to check a few things. One, you’ll want to make sure your dealership of choice offers financing and that you are who they are ideally looking to work with. Two, you’ll want to see these financing options, and maybe even a financing calculator, readily accessible on their website.

Tip #4: Make sure the dealership’s inventory provides options

A good dealership will have plenty of information on their website about the models, both new and used, that they have in stock, making it easy for you to window shop in advance. Remember though that inventory can turn over quickly so it’s always a good idea to call in advance to make sure your dream car is still available.

Tip #5: Take time to read reviews

Look for reviews not only on the website of the dealership itself but also on their social media and third-party review sites like Yelp and Google. If there are more negative than positive reviews, that’s likely a red flag. A mix of both negative and positive reviews? That’s normal for any business but a good reminder to go in with some caution and to trust your gut.

Tip #6: Look for a business philosophy

Under the dealership’s About Us page on their website, you should be able to find a philosophy about how they run their business. Ideally, you’d like to find a dealership that places emphasis on not just customer service, but also honesty, integrity, and forming good relationships with their customers. A dealership that’s involved in their community in some form or another is always positive because it means the business sees itself as part of the community and connects with the people living there.
